Mission and objectives
The mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is to work for the protection of all Human Rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.In carrying out its mission OHCHR will:• Give priority to addressing the most pressing Human Rights violations, both acute and chronic, particularly those that put life in imminent peril;• Focus attention on those who are at risk and vulnerable on multiple fronts;• Pay equal attention to the realization of civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights, including the right to development; and• Measure the impact of its work through the substantive benefit that is accrued, through it, to individuals around the world.
Context
The position is based in the office of UN Resident Coordinator of Bangladesh, under direct supervision of Senior Human Rights Advisor. The incumbent will extensively engage with staff from different UN agencies, civil society organizations and Human Rights groups. The Human Rights advisory team is primarily focused on assisting the UN Country Team and the Resident Coordinator (RC) in fulfilling Human Rights mandate of the UN. This is done through regular contextual analysis, advise on Human Rights issues and their integration into on-going work of the UN system. The team also coordinates UN’s work on different work streams and at times coordinates with development partners too.UN in the country assists and supports the government of Bangladesh in fulfilling its Human Rights obligations, including implementation of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and treaty body recommendations, engagements with special procedure mandates to highlight a few core areas.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of Senior Human Rights Advisor (SHRA) the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:• Organize, structure and streamline the existing documentation by setting up systems which can be followed;• Assist the SHRA in analysis of Human Rights context of Bangladesh to support RC with her engagement and advocacy;• Support capacity building activities in coordination with national officer for civil society;• Support the team with drafting reports/ communications or minutes;• Coordinate production of material for Human Rights campaign with civil society and communities;• The IUNV will learn about documentation systems and Human Rights analysis;• And about reporting and preparation of HR communication materials;• The incumbent will benefit from Human Rights promotion activities assisting the HRO with civil society organizations.Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;• Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.Results/Expected Outputs:• To establish a simple and clear system of keeping information and data.• To ensure quality communication material is ready for awareness raising campaign and is properly disseminated.• Capacity building activities with civil society are properly implemented and documented.
